in the last month...

Well, it has been a little over a month since I've arrived in Chambery. I'm settled into a routine with work, am getting to know the students and some people in the city. Here are some pictures of the city. It's really cute! It's small, but it has everything one could need. It's located in a valley surrounded by what are the beginnings of the Alps. There are apparently 30 ski resorts located within an hour of the city, and the region is a big tourist destination for alpine skiers. There are also many kilometers of cross country ski trails in the mountains, which I will be taking advantage of as soon as the season's open :).

I work 12 hours at the high school per week. Classes last 1 hour, and I typically take half of the students to another room and we work on conversation/comprehension. There are many different levels of English, since I'm teaching all grades. Some students are taking community college classes there, and I have a few of them as well. The school reminds me a lot of my own high school, except for that it seems like there are fewer art and sports options here. I'll try to post some pictures of the school later.

I'm living in an apartment near the city center with a single woman named Elisa (what a coincidence!) I have my own room, and we share a kitchen, bathroom and living room. She told me the whole first month that her English was really bad, so we've been speaking almost exclusively in French. Recently though, I actually heard her say a bit in English and she's really quite good! She never told me! I was a little shocked :). It has been great for my French though. The apartment is on the 9th floor, so I have a great view of the surrounding hills/mountains. There are a few pictures of the view below.

The first week I was here I went hiking with a few of the teachers from the school, so there are some pictures of that too. Enjoy!
